One night last week Don and I went and saw the movie “42”. “42” is a movie based on a true story about Jackie Robinson, the first African-American to play baseball in the big leagues. At one point in the movie a father and son are sitting in the crowd. While Mr. Robinson is on the field, the father and surrounding adults are yelling racial slurs. After watching the adults for a few seconds, the son joins in. The son did not have a clue what he was doing, he was only mimicking the behavior he was seeing from the surrounding adults. This is learned behavior! This is tradition! Tradition and learned behavior is passed from generation to generation until no one understands what they are doing. They are just following in the footsteps of their ancestors. There are no boundaries and no one is immune. We will find it in our homes, in our communities, and in our churches. Here is my challenge for us today! Look around! Be aware of our surroundings! Ask God to make us aware of behavior that does not line up with his Word. Ask him to show us traditions . . . . learned behaviors we have passed on to our children and grandchildren. Ask him to help us change those behaviors so we can become more like him. May God bless us and keep us safe! Let us walk in his Word today, guiding our every step!
